Goodyear Women in Engineering
Team members visited Goodyear to represent the University at
Goodyear's Women in Engineering Day. The event included displays on the
different disciplines in engineering as well as panelists of community
members in the field to answer questions and lead discussion on
opportunities for women in an engineering profession. Sarah Vano,
heating and cabin cooling team member was a panelist representing
college opportunities.

Akron Aeros Education Day
The University of Akron was proud to participate in the Akron Aeros
Education Day. Grade school students from around the county were
bussed to the Aeros' stadium for a day filled with baseball and
learning about science and math. Students were explained how Joey
could be good for the environment in the future.

The University of Akron's Kid's Career Day
The University of Akron held its own Kid's Career Day, inviting the
Challenge X team to explain the program and uses of alternative fuels as
a growing necessity for the future. Students were on hand to show
young girls how to make their own version of an alternative fuel vehicle
using paper, straws, life savers, tape and paper clips. Thanks to PBS
Kids for the great idea. To see the project, click

High School Visitation
The University of Akron's Challenge
X team has been busy visiting high schools to educate students about the
need for alternative energy and the Challenge X program. Recently, teams
have visited Norton High School and many others.
Contests
This year, the University of Akron's
team has decided to hold contests to promote further learning about
alternative fuels, and the United States' acceptance of these concepts.
Please click on the links below to view the contests for each grade
division and some of the entries of current winners. The winners are
randomly selected and invited to the university to ride in Joey on May
11. To enter the contest, please email your entry to the team by

Firestone High School Project
Challenge X is an innovative
approach to engineering education - and the Zips are extending this
philosophy beyond college graduate and undergraduate students to high
school students.
Students in Mr. Dan Spak's
engineering program at Firestone High School, part of the Akron City
Public Schools, are part of a nation-wide program called Project Lead
the Way which introduces students to the world of engineering. Mr.
Spak and Challenge X team leaders worked together to develop a
real-world design project for the students. The challenge was to
design a container for the team's ultracapacitors. Although the
team will only be using the container for testing purposes, the design
intent was for use in the Equinox in place of the rear bench seat.
On November 2nd, the students came
to Akron's campus and presented their designs to Challenge X team
members and advisors, additional representatives of the College of
Engineering, and representatives from Firestone High School and Project
Lead the Way. The students' design and attention to detail, as
well as their overall presentation, were very impressive.
Congratulations on a job well done!
